If you get your water from a well, having a pump you can rely on is incredibly important. On top of that, most surface pumps won’t work if your well is more than about 25 feet deep. The best submersible well pump, on the other hand, can access water down to hundreds of feet below ground.
We looked at 17 of outstanding submersible well pumps on the market today in order to help you find the best model. The Hallmark Industries MA0414X-7 won our Editor’s Choice thanks to its extremely fast 33-gallon per minute pump rate and ability to work in wells more than 200 feet deep. We also gathered six other submersible well pumps that we think are worth taking a closer look at.
We considered a number of different features when reviewing these well pumps. To start, we looked at the horsepower, which affects the flow rate and maximum well depth that you can use the pump for. We also looked at what diameter of well casing the pump fits. We spent tens of hours coming up with our top seven submersible well pumps, which are highlighted in the table below. This heavy-duty submersible well pump from Hallmark Industries took our Editor’s Choice award thanks to its impeccable construction. To start, the pump offers a one-horsepower motor that allows it to generate a maximum head of 207 feet. That’s more than enough for most homes, although you might be on the border of what this pump can handle if you have a pressure tank switch in your system.
What really sets this pump apart is its flow rate. The pump is most efficient when you’re drawing a whopping 33 GPM, so it’s ideal for anyone that uses a lot of water. The impellers are made from heavy-duty thermoplastic, so you don’t have to worry about the flow rate degrading over time with this pump.
The pump is made with a two-wire design and features a built-in control box. That means you don’t need to wire a control box to the ground surface for external start. The built-in capacitor starter is constructed with thermal control to extend the life of the pump unit and reduce maintenance frequency. On top of that, the entire pump is cased in corrosion-resistant stainless steel and has a 1-1/4-inch cast iron discharge.
The only downside to this pump is that some users found Hallmark Industries’ customer service to be lacking. The company was somewhat unresponsive when individual units had problems after a few months of operation. Also beware that the pump only comes with a one-year warranty.
This one-half-horsepower submersible well pump from Hallmark Industries is essentially a less powerful version of our Editor’s Choice MA0414X-7. The pump produces enough head to reach down 150 feet, which is still more than enough for the majority of home wells. Like Hallmark Industries’ other home use pumps, this model is able to fit into any well with a casing that is at least four inches in diameter
The pump features a two-wire construction and an internal control box, which makes installation fairly straightforward. The motor is thermally protected to prevent overheating and extend the life of the pump. Plus, the construction of the pump housing is designed for industrial applications, so it has very little trouble handling the demands of domestic use.
The only real sacrifice you make when sizing down to this pump is that the flow rate drops to 25 GPM. But, that’s still a huge volume of water delivered very quickly, especially when you consider that this pump only has a small one-half-horsepower motor that’s light on electricity. The pump is powered by a standard 120-volt household outlet, too, which makes it easy to plug into your electrical grid.
Unfortunately, while most users found this pump lasts years without a problem, Hallmark Industries is very unresponsive when customers do experience an issue. Several customers noted that the company does not honor it’s one-year warranty on the pump.
This one-horsepower submersible well pump from Red Lion is ideal for deeper wells. It’s capable of producing a maximum head of 250 feet, so it works regardless of whether you have a pressure tank switch as part of your well system. Importantly, the pump also includes an external control box that can be wired up to the surface so you can adjust the pump and turn it on or off.
It’s worth noting that this pump has a 230-volt electrical connection. So, you’ll need a dedicated 240-volt outlet to run this pump off of. If you’re planning to power it with a generator, make sure your generator is capable of producing 240-volt power.
The pump fits into any well with a casing that is four inches or longer in diameter. Although the impeller is made of fortified thermoplastic, users reported issues with broken impellers after just a few months of use with a surprising frequency. This shouldn’t be a huge issue since Red Lion warranties the pump for up to three years – far longer than any other manufacturer we looked at. However, you’ll need to be prepared to wrangle the company’s customer service team if you want to replace a pump that does wear down quicker than it should.
The other thing to note about this pump is that it is most efficient at a 12 GPM flow rate. That’s significantly lower than the Hallmark Industries pumps, but it can actually be a good thing if you don’t use a ton of water around your home.
This 1.5-horsepower submersible well pump from Red Lion isn’t cheap. But, it makes up for its price by offering unparalleled pumping. The pump produces a maximum head of 250 feet and operates most efficiently at a 12 GPM flow rate. Like the smaller RL12G10-2W2 from Red Lion, it includes an external control box that you can wire to the top of your well for more precise control over the pump’s functioning.
The best thing about this pump is its construction. The entire pump is encased in a thick sheath of stainless steel that can’t easily be corroded. A built-in suction screen prevents debris inside your well from being sucked into the impellers, which in turn helps to extend the life of the pump. The interior of the pump also features multiple flow channels, which helps to keep small particles that make it through the suction screen – like sand – from getting into the bearing surfaces and causing wear and tear.
Keep in mind that this submersible pump does require 230-volt power, which means you’ll need a dedicated shop outlet to run it. The pump can be installed in any well with a casing four inches in diameter or larger.
Red Lion covers the pump with a three-year warranty. However, some users noted that it takes some fighting with the company’s customer service team in order for that warranty to be honored.
This small and fairly inexpensive submersible well pump from ECO-WORTHY is designed to be powered by a solar panel array. It uses 24-volt DC power, which corresponds to what most solar panels put out without a transformer box. ECO-WORTHY even sells this pump coupled with one or more solar panels, so you can get an off-the-grid well pump set up quickly.
As you’d expect from a solar-powered pump, this unit isn’t all that powerful. The 230-foot head is very impressive, but the 1.6 GPM flow rate is something of a trickle compared to what other pumps can put out. Still, not having to pay for power is a big plus, and this pump can work in remote locations where other pumps would need a generator.
Interestingly, ECO-WORTHY chose to build this pump with a thermoplastic housing rather than a stainless-steel housing. That allows the pump to weigh in at just 6.4 pounds, and the thermoplastic is just as resistant to corrosion. However, it remains to be seen whether this pump can stand up to a decade or more of use without the case becoming brittle and cracking.
The pump fits in any well that is at least four inches in diameter. The motor is thermally insulated to prevent overheating. If anything goes wrong, ECO-WORTHY stands behind the pump with a one-year warranty and does a better job with customer service than many industrial pump manufacturers.
This one-horsepower submersible well pump from SCHRAIBERPUMP is a higher-flow alternative to the Red Lion pumps. It still offers an extremely deep maximum head of 242 feet, but it bumps up the most efficient flow rate to 22 GPM. That makes it a great choice for anyone with a deep well who also needs a relatively large volume of water delivered quickly.
The pump is designed without a control box. Instead, it starts directly. Insulating copper wire and a thick stainless steel casing help to thermally isolate the motor, so you get the most longevity from this pump. The pump also features a custom impeller design that maximizes flow while reducing energy consumption.
One thing that’s very important to note is that there is no filter or protection against debris in your well water as part of this pump. SCHRAIBERPUMP particularly notes that damage from sand is not covered by the company’s one-year warranty, so you have to be somewhat sure that your well water is pure or that your well extends well past the water table level.
Users did also express some concern about the wiring included with this pump. The splice kit, which you can use to wire the pump into your electrical system, is not particularly helpful. So, you’ll have to be able to solder the wiring together in order to install the pump. Other users noted that the wiring for the motor itself is narrow-gauge enough that it can cause overheating over time.
This solar-powered submersible well pump from Pentair takes the cake for reliability. The pump is encased in an extremely durable stainless steel and Santoprene diaphragm and features valves made of EDPM synthetic rubber. Thanks to that, you don’t have to worry about water infiltrating the pump components even through years of use. On top of that, the unit can be run dry without damage and it’s designed to be easy to connect to whatever wiring your solar panels use.
The pump produces a maximum head of 230 feet, although the flow rate is limited to just 1.9 GPM. That’s significantly more flow than the ECO-WORTHY solar pump, but it’s worth noting that this pump costs roughly seven times as much. That alone makes it extremely hard to justify this pump – even if it lasts twice as long as the ECO-WORTHY pump, you’re still paying a lot more for nearly the same performance.
The Pentair submersible pump can be fit into any well with at least a four-inch diameter casing. Surprisingly given the high price, it only comes with a one-year warranty. Notably, some users did have issues with the motor burning out earlier than expected, which may be due to the fact that this pump doesn’t thermally isolate the motor.

Our buying guide will cover everything you need to know about these pumps, including why you need one and how to get the best pump for your well conditions.
Advantages of a submersible well pump
Submersible well pumps are designed to operate at the bottom of your well, completely submerged in water. That’s a big difference from typical surface or jet pumps, and it gives submersible well pumps a couple important advantages.
First, submersible well pumps have enough power to access deep water. Whereas many surface pumps can’t pump water from deeper than 25 feet, many submersible well pumps can pump water up from more than 150 feet underground. While you could achieve this from the surface with a jet pump, they tend to be noisy and take up a lot of floor space in your home.
Submersible well pumps don’t take up any space and you’ll barely notice they’re operating after installation.
Another advantage to submersible pumps is that they don’t need to be primed like surface pumps. That’s because they’re already submerged in water. As a result, there’s no chance of cavitation causing problems for your water line.
Finally, submersible pumps are extremely durable. If installed properly, a submersible well pump can last for 25 years or more before it needs to be replaced. Most likely, it also won’t need service more than once every couple of years. That’s a lot less maintenance compared to the typical surface pump.
Features to consider before you buy a submersible well pump
When you’re choosing a new submersible well pump, it’s extremely important to match your pump to your well. With that, there’s a couple different factors to consider. Let’s take a look at the specifications that matter most before you buy a submersible well pump.
Depth to water
The first thing you need to figure out is whether your pump offers enough head to reach the water in your well. The maximum head describes the maximum height your pump can send water.
As an example, the Hallmark Industries MA0414X-7 has a maximum head of 207 feet. That means that this pump is suitable if the bottom of your well is 207 feet or less from the ground surface. If your well is deeper, you would need a pump with a deeper maximum head.
There is a trick to this, however. You have to account for a pressure tank if you have one. We’ll dive into more detail on that below.
The flow rate specified on your pump is the flow rate that it is most efficient at, rather than it’s maximum flow rate. Still, you’ll want to take care to match your pump’s efficient flow rate to the amount of water that you actually use. This requires some estimation, since you probably use more water when showering or watering a garden than you do when using the kitchen or bathroom. Pump flow rates range a lot, from just 1.6 GPM (gallons per minute) for the ECO-WORTHY submersible pump to more than 30 GPM for the Hallmark Industries MA0414X-7.
Your pump’s horsepower describes how much power the pump motor has. The horsepower rating plays a big role in determining the maximum head and most efficient flow rate of your pump, although the horsepower itself isn’t all that important a specification you need to worry about.
An important thing to keep in mind is that you can’t simply match your new pump’s horsepower to your old pump’s horsepower and call it a day. Different manufacturers use different ratings and internal designs. For example, the 1-horsepower submersible pump has a maximum head of 250 feet, while the 1-horsepower pump from Hallmark Industries has a maximum head of just 207 feet – a very significant difference!
Well casing diameter
Of course, you also need to make sure that your pump is going to fit inside your well. Typically, this means ensuring that the diameter of your pump is less than the diameter of your well casing.
All of the submersible well pumps that we reviewed require a well casing that is at least four inches in diameter, although larger is also okay.
Pressure tank switch settings
If you have a pressure tank as part of your pump system, you’ll have to do some extra calculations to figure out what your pump’s maximum head needs to be. Start out by finding the higher of the two numbers on your pressure tank, and multiply it by 2.307. Then, add that to your well depth to figure out the maximum head depth you need.
As an example, let’s say you have a 100-foot deep well and a pressure tank rated 30/50. You’ll multiply 50 by 2.307, which equals 115.35. Then add that to 100, and you find that you need a head of at least 215.35 feet.
Source of power and voltage
Some pumps, like the Hallmark Industries pumps, are rated to use 110-volt power. Others, like the Red Lion pumps, are rated for 230-volt power. Neither is necessarily better, but you’ll need to think about what power source you’re planning to plug your pump into.
If you only have a standard 120-volt outlet available, you’ll need a pump that requires 110 volts. If you have a 240-volt outlet, you can use a 230-volt pump or use a 110-volt pump with a step-down transformer.
Pumps like the Pentair and ECO-WORTHY submersible pumps only require 24 volts. These can be plugged into any outlet as long as you have the appropriate step-down adapter to use with it.
Pump’s discharge size
The discharge pipe size of your pump is another factor to consider. Typically, this should match or exceed the diameter of pipe system used in your home. As long as your pipe size is larger, the pump can deliver enough water to fill your home’s pipes and you can add an adapter to connect the pipe systems.
Properly manufactured and installed submersible well pipes can last for 25 years or more. It’s surprising, then, that most pumps only come with a one-year limited warranty. Red Lion stands out for protecting your submersible pipe for up to three years after purchase.
Let’s look at an example. If you have a well that’s 100 feet deep, you need a pump that offers at least 100 feet of head. But, if you also have a pressure tank, you need to take that into account. Multiply the higher setting on your pressure tank switch by 2.307 and add that to your well depth. So, if you have a 30/50 pressure switch, you’d need a head of at least 215.35 feet.
No. Plugging a 110-volt pump into a 220-volt outlet is dangerous, since the extra energy can fry your motor or even start a fire. If you only have a 220-volt outlet available, you’ll need to use a step-down transformer to run a 110-volt well pump.
Yes! You can connect solar panels on your roof directly into your well pump or use solar panels to power your whole home. You’ll probably want to have supplemental electricity if your panels are connected directly to your pump, since you otherwise won’t be able to pump water at night or in very cloudy conditions.
Our three overall favorite submersible well pumps on the market today are the MA0414X-7 and MA0343X-4 from Hallmark Industries and the RL12G10-2W2V from Red Lion. The Red Lion pump is ideal for deep wells and well systems with a pressure tank switch, thanks to the fact that it can produce a maximum head up to 250 feet. The pump also comes with a three-year warranty, although you do pay for the warranty in the higher price. The two Hallmark Industries pumps are very similar and which is best for you really depends on the depth of your well. We think the MA0414X-7 is the overall best submersible well because it offers a massive 33 GPM flow rate and a maximum head of 207 feet. That makes it suitable for the widest variety of wells. Plus, it’s fairly inexpensive and the high-quality construction ensures that it will last for decades.
